“This is the first time I’ve had support that actually helps and doesn’t judge me.”
We provide 1:1 mentoring support to young people aged 14-25 involved in group-based serious violence.
Our dedicated team support young people to reach their full potential, building on their strengths, and rediscovering their passions and interests. One of our Programme Leads, Karl, worked with Reece to help him recognise his abilities and inspire him to create a brighter future for himself and his family.
Before joining the programme, Reece, 18, felt that he had to deal with everything in his life alone. Managing the responsibilities of being a father, searching for work and navigating benefits and housing left him overwhelmed and unsure of how to get the right support.
He needed some guidance to effectively manage these aspects of his life while improving his confidence. Karl, one of our Programme Leads, worked with Reece on these challenges.
Reece and Karl’s first few sessions started at a coffee shop which really boosted Reece’s productivity and made him feel relaxed and comfortable. The atmosphere of the coffee shop, combined with Karl’s kind nature, allowed Reece to express himself freely.
He encouraged Reece to set goals that aligned with his future aspirations. One of Reece’s goals was to complete his passport application. To do this, Reece needed to speak to someone from his old secondary school about his application and Karl went with him.
Before the meeting, Reece was hesitant and didn’t want to go in. Having Karl by his side for support allowed Reece to face his nerves head on and find the courage to attend the meeting.
From here, Reece began to have greater confidence in his abilities which motivated him as he considered his future opportunities.
Recently, Reece and Karl went on a hike to the Lake District where they went on a boat cruise and had a meal next to the lake. They had a lot of fun and Reece was full of enthusiasm the entire day.
He said, “I can see myself having a life [in the countryside] with my son.”
During the trip, Reece found a new passion for cinematography as this was a shared interest between him and Karl. This led to Reece creating a video of their adventures in the Lake District.
Through the sessions and activities with Karl, Reece discovered that life was full of possibility.
Towards the end of the programme, Reece made the decision to either start a college course in the public services or social care – he is excited about the next stage in his life!
“Reece has improved in his ability to handle situations more calmy and efficiently. He is more proactive when it comes to figuring things out. He is more focused on his future,” said Karl.
Reece has also reintegrated back into the community by going to the gym regularly.
Karl supported Reece throughout multiple challenges during their time together. The bond they developed helped Reece to accept the support he needed and changed his life for the better. He now handles conflict better, is positive about his education and future, is more confident in his skills and has found more time for his family.
Our 1:1 programme gives young people the trusted adult support they need to thrive.
