New Bury Boxing Club was established through community-led programmes and has been running for nearly four years. In partnership with organisations such as Bolton Wanderers in the Community, The Great Lever and Farnworth Voice, and 1Message, the club has received Community Cohesion and Resilience funding. This funding supports efforts to strengthen community ties by educating young people and local residents about different cultures, hate crime, stereotyping, and online safety.
As part of this work, New Bury Boxing invited Olympic medallist Cindy Ngamba to visit the club, giving young people and community members the opportunity to engage with her and ask questions.
Cindy Ngamba is a Bolton-based boxer who moved to the UK from Cameroon at the age of 11 as a refugee. Her journey growing up was far from easy, but she found strength and direction through boxing, which she began at 15. With determination and talent, she quickly climbed the ranks, winning three national amateur championships across different weight classes and earning a spot training with Team GB.
In 2024, she was selected to represent the Refugee Olympic Team and made history by becoming the first athlete from the team to win an Olympic medal—bringing home a bronze.
During her visit to the club, Cindy Ngamba spent the evening engaging with the community—doing some padwork with some of the female boxers and answering questions from young people and local residents. She stayed to enjoy the rest of the evening with everyone, sharing stories and some well-deserved pizza.
The event left a lasting impression, especially on the young attendees, with several girls now inspired to take up boxing. Cindy has expressed her intention to return and looks forward to seeing some of the young boxers in action.
